School Workshops

CIMG1130_edited.jpg

Surtal Asian Arts strongly believes that arts play a vital role in our society especially where children & young people concern.  For over 30 years we've been providing workshops aimed for children and young people in nurseries, schools, colleges, probation service and youth centres. We're extremely proud of the quality work we do in education, and have inspired hundreds of young people along the way!

What kind of activities do we offer?

From one hour taster sessions to assembly performances, we offer a variety of packages to suit your needs.

We also deliver long term projects using South Asian dance (Indian Classical, Folk Bhangra, Bollywood Dance), music (various percussion, singing), culturally specific visual arts, storytelling and digital arts.

Tailored experiences

Workshops are tailored to your group’s age, interests, needs, timescale and budget, providing educational, creative and enjoyable learning experiences, whilst promoting a greater understanding of world music, dance and cultures.

Workshops can be designed to complement your curriculum or event themes.  Some of our most popular themes have been: Diversity Week, India Week, Village India, World Music, Harvest Festival, Eid workshop, Festival of Light & Diwali.

Derby Season of Light (DSOL) - One of our annual project that we offer to all schools in Derby is the Lantern Making Project where schools are offered subsidised workshops as part of our annual festival DSOL where children and young people make lanterns using the theme of 'light' and 'climate action'.  All lanterns are created with guidance from a professional artist and using biodegradable and recycled materials.  All schools are encouraged to participate in our Lantern Parade with their finished lanterns.  Each year approximately 350-500 children and young people participate.

It is a popular project and we are usually oversubscribed.  Therefore, we request schools to contact us early by April each year if they wish for their schools to be involved.

Our artists and artefacts

All of Surtal Arts’ artists are trained and experienced tutors with CRB/DBS checks

Surtal Arts has extensive culturally specific artefacts and costumes that are used in schools workshops.  Schools can also have these on loan for their independent use.

Workshop costs depend on the activity chosen and amount of materials required for the art form.
