Anniversary Milestone Marked By Future Plans Announcement

Surtal Arts celebrates its 30th anniversary this year with an announcement of exciting plans to further embed itself into the city and county’s cultural landscape.

Derby Season of Light is Surtal Art’s flagship annual festival and, to coincide with announcing the dazzling 2024 programme, Surtal Arts has unveiled its longer-term vision.

The focus is to nurture the next generation of South Asian creatives and cultural leaders and to engage even more people across all cultures in Derby and Derbyshire.

Surtal Arts has embarked on its year-long programme entitled ‘Vibrant Visions’ thanks to funding secured from Arts Council England and National Lottery.

About Surtal Arts

Founded in 1994, Surtal Arts is a Derby based combined arts organisation (non-profit making charity 1121010) with specialism in South Asian arts & cross cultural productions. We promote high quality arts to build social cohesion in the city through creative learning opportunities, improve physical & mental health & wellbeing.

Surtal Arts is a non-venue based eco-friendly organisation.

Our priority is to work with children and young people, emerging artists from diverse communities particularly British Asians.  70% of our work is with children & young people, emerging artists from diverse communities in schools & communities.  We create creative opportunities for them to have a ’place’ in the wider and mainstream arts world as creators, audience and participants through production, promotion, advocacy, education and outreach activities in the hope that this will spark their imagination and raise their aspirations for the future career and  contribute to the city’s cultural life in making it a thriving, inclusive and vibrant place and enhancing quality of life.  30% of our work is with older people and women in health & wellbeing.

We provide on demand arts workshops in schools, college, health sector and care homes throughout the year.  We also undertake commission work from private to statutory organisations and businesses.

We provide regular dance class & choir singing & organise annual festival  Derby Season of Light & Derby Lantern Parade in partnership with various arts & cultural partners from Derby and Derbyshire.
